Yesterday I had the most wonderful treat and I got to share it with two very special girlies and now that I've done this once - I CAN'T WAIT to do it all over again!!!
I cannot believe that I've never done this before plus I could've been doing this all along with so many lovely ladies in my life. This will definitely not be the last time I can tell you that for sure.
First up I had booked a date for us to spend together with a few other gals but it was so far in advance that gradually one by one they cried off as things came up. We had originally planned an outing to the Cath Kidston outlet at Eaton Socon, St Neots but I found I had to completely re-think plans. Instead I came up with this idea - inspired by Jilly's birthday tea party a few weeks back. Then when I was surfing the net on my lunch break last week and ran across this fab inspiration from
Debbie Olson which just happened to be yellow - the colour of the Twinings Everyday tea I am now completely converted to since Jilly's party - well I knew how I could use my WMS tea stamp sets to pull it altogether.
Since I had been planning this for a couple of weeks I jumped at the chance to pick up this pretty embroidered table cloth for just .50 p in a charity store in Stowmarket last weekend - the colours were perfect! I am constantly blown away by what you can find if you set your mind to it.
It hasn't taken me long to get an empty Twinings tea box - I lurve my tea! I decorated one up and luckily for me when I stopped in at Marks & Spencers on my way home from work Friday to pick up tea party food the sweet little square fondant iced cakes just happened to be in a yellow box as well. It was all coming together so perfectly.
This is the detail on the top of the box once it was tied closed. The touches of orange on the box made my orange ribbon and the kinda distressed orange/yellow designer paper I used work so well together - even if I do say so myself LOL.
And for those of you who might be wondering what I put inside the box - wonder no more! I whipped up some double cream (I add a little powdered sugar to mine to sweeten it a bit) and then made up some 20 minute microwave jam (recipe below), used my lovely 'weck' jars for each of these (another charity shop find at .50 p each about a year ago) and I even added a small ice pack inside on the bottom to keep the cream chilled.
Then I popped in a couple of fruit scones to fill out the box and complete the whole thing and brought along extra scones separately. Couldn't you just see giving this to a friend or neighbour? I'm logging that idea for the future.
No tea party would be complete without sandwiches but as I didn't want them to get soggy and I needed to keep fillings chilled I just bagged up some pretty mini rolls - brown & white in two decorated paper sacks and kept the fillings in a chilled bag on blue ice.
I filled a basket with all the china cups and saucers and some clear plastic tumblers I spotted for a round pound each at the local grocery store the day before - I took old fashioned lemonade to drink with straws as well since it was a really hot day. My cake stands were all stainless steel so I wouldn't worry about breaking my nice ones and I even had a fancy stainless steel tea pot and matching milk jug.
I took along two flasks of hot water but I dropped the bag with the flasks in and the larger one broke. That left just the smaller one but it gave Gillian and I at least one cup of tea. I took along a small milk flask and grabbed the sugar cubes that make a rare appearance now and then - thank goodness sugar keeps a while.
As fortune would have it, God even provided the perfect table for us. Just as we parked and got out our goodies an older couple vacated the wooden picnic table just in front of us and He even provided a tree or two to string up a bit of bunting. I brought along a blanket to lay on the ground but this all worked sooooo much better on a table. Things happened to make this whole treat perfect that I just couldn't have planned if I'd tried!
Here's Gillian and Bethany as we were beginning to set up.
We filled the rolls and set them on the bottom layer of the stands, added the scones and pretty cakes to the top layers, plated up quiche to go with a bit of salad, set the tea brewing and poured the lemonade. It was actually even more fun since everyone helped to make sandwiches and help set the food and drink out - again something I hadn't planned but it worked perfectly.
I had purchased some flowers from the reduced section of M & S and taken along a Kilner jar of water which I decorated simply with a paper doily, ribbon and stamped label. I'd taken along scissors and let Bethany trim and arrange the flowers in the jar as the finishing touch. Afterwards she was able to tip out the water and take the flowers home in the jar to enjoy for the rest of the week.
With the exception of a bit of picnic food this was a relatively inexpensive treat. It took more time and effort than anything else and a whole lot of fore-thought. There's not much I'd change if I did it again but I would add a few extra things and I'm now keeping my eye out for a BIG basket to fit everything in and a slightly smaller cool bag. I think I'd use one of my vintage sheets to make a larger 'base layer' table cloth and fabric napkins for next time so I don't have to buy napkins every time too.
I sure hope I get to squeeze at least one more of these 'Tea Parties in the Park' into my summer this year, my mother would love one of these I'm sure! If you've never tried one of these why not go ahead and treat yourself and a friend. With or without all the pretty stamping, a simple bit of paper doily and ribbon can do wonders.
I hope I've inspired you to try something like this at least.
Microwave Jam
500g fruit (berries), 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1 lb (2 cups) sugar.
Add the lemon juice to the fruit in a large microwavable bowl. Cook on high 4 minutes to soften fruit. Stir in sugar and cook 20 minutes on high, strirring occasionally. Test on a chilled saucer, cook a further 5 minutes if required but jam will seem slightly runnier than normal. Let stand 5 minutes to thicken slightly then jar into clean sterilised jars.
Jam will thicken further overnight and if chilled too.
I use this recipe year after year and have tried gooseberries, blueberries, raspberries and the strawberry jam is scrumilicious! It never stays around long in our house. I have black currants in the fridge - first ones picked from the allotment ever to try.
Enjoy!
