Square Envelope Tutorial

Finally I am getting around to posting this tutorial. Square envelopes in all the sizes you need can be very hard to find. I can't remember where I discovered how to make a square envelope - I just know I have been making them (and teaching them) for longer than I can remember. Every now and then I add them to a class because I like sharing how easy it is to create these.

Step 1. Begin by making a template. I always suggest this for 2 reasons: A. because you don't want a finished envelope with folds where they shouldn't be and B. so you get a perfect fit every time from perfecting your template first.

Cut a square - I started with 6" x 6" which makes a finished size of 4" square.

Step 2. Fold square in half one way and score well.

Step 3. Fold over in half again and score as before.

Step 4. On the 'fold' edges (there are two), mark 1/4" and then 1/4" on corresponding 'open' edges as shown. IMPORTANT! Make sure you measure this accurately or your envelope will not fit correctly. Don't be discourgaed if it takes a couple of tries at this to get the end result - this is why you start by making a template and not the real thing!

Step 5. Snip off the 2 corners lining up the scissors with the marks as you cut.

Step 6. Open out the square and you should end up with four 'triangular' notches all the same.

Step 7. Line up your ruler as shown and score with an embossing tool. Repeat this all the way around (4 times).

Step 8. Fold in both sides along score lines. They should overlap.

Step 9. Fold up the bottom to overlap sides

Step 10. Use a corner rounder punch to round the corner of the top 'flap'.

Step 11. Fold over the top 'flap' and check the envelope for fit and accuracy. DO NOT adhere at this stage!

Step 12. Once you are happy with the paper template create a permanent one using acetate. Begin by cutting to the original size square as before.

Step 13. Place the paper template on top and mark and cut out notches. Use a permanent market to outline and mark template with cut and score lines and note finished envelope size for reference.

Step 14. Make several paper templates in different sizes and then transfer to acetate as before. Use different colours for easier reference and punch a hole to clip templates onto a ring for storage.
Step 15. Use template to cut envelope and secure sides and bottom edges with adhesive tape taking care to add adhesive only where it's needed. Use an 'envelope' glue (apply wet, let dry and wet when ready to seal) along top flap or alternatively use thin adhesive tape or a decorative sticker on the outside to seal.

I use the 'greetings' glue from Stampin Up! which works a treat.

I mostly make my envelopes from a 90 gsm weight 'extra white' paper but it's also fun to make them from patterned paper especially if there are scraps left over to use on the card so everything co-ordinates nicely.

I'd love to hear how you get on with these instructions but please contact me if you have problems - I'm happy to help.
