Half Pint Heros

I made a purchase of an older Waltzing Mouse stamp set recently.  I just HAD to do it!  There are several sets that I simply haven't ever gotten around to buying yet and then some that I umm & arrh over simply because I can't make up my mind if I'd use them (or need them).  And every now and then a reason comes along like the holiday club we're running at our church.

The theme this year is outer space so we're running our very own 'space academy' in April.  It hasn't taken long for word to get around that I am a crafty soul and I was asked to do the badges for the young space cadets this time around.  I knew as soon as I got the brief from Beth that I HAD to have the WMS Half Pint Heros stamp set.  This was one of those sets that had me umming and arrhing for some time now.  I see such cute cards but the grandkids are getting older and I don't do boys so well so I've always avoiding getting it until now.

I've been working on my proto type over the weekend and this is what I finally came up with - an entire sheet of stamped and coloured badges that have the event and year plus the words 'space cadet' and space to add the various kids names.  I stamped up and coloured sheets to make mass production easier.  We need 30 per group and there are 4 groups.

The four groups will each be represented by a different coloured planet - red, blue, green and yellow so I will add a coloured circle  behind each.  They then get laminated and we'll add safety pins to the back to attach them.  Beth has a special silver pen to add in the names of each child.

All in all I think they turned out pretty cute so I'm really glad I had a reason to finally make this purchase.

All that's left to do now is reproduce and cut out the 120 badges and coloured circles we need.  Phew! Tomorrow evening I'm sewing up a bunch of costumes with one or two girlies for the play.  Shame I will be at work and don't even get to go along myself huh?

Mother's Day

Do you remember I showed you those pretty vintage spools full of pink ric rac ?  Well I can finally show you what I made with them.  I crafted a brooch for my mother - isn't it just gorgeous (if I do say so myself).

I absolutely fell in love with it once it was finished - so much so that I could happily have kept it all for myself LOL!  I have concluded that if something is pretty enough that I want to keep it for me then it's special enough to be given away to the person I've made it for.

I have been wanting to make one of these ric rac roses ever since I pinned it on my Pinterest boards and I wasn't a bit disappointed.  They turned out exactly as the instructions said they would.

I chose to use one of my PTI button cards to mount it on for gifting simply by arranging it and then marking where to punch two holes to pass the brooch back through.  I popped it into a pretty white paper sack and then decorated up the outside - sorry I forgot to photograph that bit - I was in a rush to get it to her.

And here is a slightly more close up shot.  These are super easy to make that I could easily whip up a whole bunch whilst watching the telly.  I made the leaves using a circle of fabric.  I simply folded the fabric over in half which created a curved raw edge and a folded straight edge.  I used a running stitch on the curved edge catching both layers in at the same time.  Once you pull up the stitches the straight edge bends down on either side giving you a perfect petal shape - or in this case a leaf.

I covered the back with a padded out circle of pink fabric to hide all the stitching and added a brooch pin to the circle.  If I make another one I'll be sure to photograph the back as it was super neat.

To go with her brooch (and flowers and choccies) I made up a quick card that was a variation on the one we made at her tea & chat group.  I used my sewing machine and stitched on the background paper plus a bright red heart shaped doily.  Next I layered up an inked and distressed round doily and then finally one of the WMS images from a set I am currently borrowing from a good friend.  I had previously coloured in the flower image just having a play so this became my colour inspiration.

And here's a close up shot of the sentiment.  I did decorate up the inside a bit but again I didn't get time to take a snapshot.  Between church in the morning and evening and then running around gifts to my mother and older daughter I didn't get much time in-between for anything else.

Well I have to run, it's been my long day at work so I've been up since 5.30 am today and still going, it's now 6.45 pm and dinners cooked so I'm off to dish up and have me a bit of a sit down and rest.

My Pretty Tea Cup Pincushion

Real quick since my soup is calling - I promised to share a picture of my pincushion in a teacup that I made at the trade fair in Birmingham for a make 'n' take.  Well here it is finally.

Isn't it pretty?  I had sooooo much fun making this.  I have always wanted to make one of these and I have two cups and saucers that were mom's that I thought might be nice made up like this for the girls.  As just a teacup they're pretty but made up as a pincushion they become pretty AND practical so I WILL do them if it kills me LOL!

And do you see that scrummy pink ric rac on my vintage spools?  I'm working on a ric rac rose today - well half blogging and half crafting.  After a nap I might even finish it too.  It was one of those things I pinned intending to do some day so I'll work on finishing it later today and post it at some point - promise.  Okay, okay - soup first!!!  Gotta go.
